Adding The 'Red Alert' Soundtrack

The Red Alert audio files are in a format that cannot be read by Yuri's Revenge, so they must be converted. You do not need to have Red Alert installed to extract the audio files; it can be done directly from either of the Red Alert game CDs. They are on the Counterstrike and Aftermath expansion CDs as well.

There are 23 music themes in Red Alert. The audio files must be converted from AUD to WAV. XCC Mixer can perform the conversion in a two-step process that must be repeated for each audio file.

Creating the Red Alert Music Packs:

  1. Refer to the following tables to perform the directions below. Be sure to name the music pack filenames exactly, or the game will not find them; and name the mix files exactly as well, or the YR Playlist Manager will not recognize that you have the Red Alert music packs installed.

    ecachethemeRED1.mix

  2. Insert either Red Alert CD into your CD drive. Using XCC Mixer, navigate to the CD's root directory. Open main.mix>scores.mix. [Help]

  3. Use XCC Mixer to convert (not extract) the files listed in the 'Source File' column of the tables to WAV. You won't find the Intro or Map Select tracks here; you'll do that in the next step. [Help]

  4. Close scores.mix and main.mix, and open Install\redalert.mix>local.mix. Convert (not extract) intro.aud and map.aud. [Help]

  5. The files are now in WAV format, but they do not use the proper compression. They must be converted again. Use XCC Mixer to now convert the WAV files you just created to 22.050 kHz WAV IMA ADPCM format. [Help]

  6. Rename the Intro Theme file from intro.wav to raintro.wav.

  7. Create a new MIX file, name it ecachethemeRED1.mix, and insert the 11 tracks listed in the first table into this MIX. Then create another new MIX file, name it ecachethemeRED2.mix, and insert the 12 tracks listed in the second table into this MIX. (If you wish to put all the tracks into one single large MIX file, then name it ecachethemeRA.mix). [Help]

  8. Ensure that the new MIX files you have created are in your Red Alert 2 folder so the game can find them.

  9. If you wish, you can now delete the loose audio files you've been working with to create these music packs.

  10. Enable the Red Alert soundtrack using the Playlist Manager. During the game, the Red Alert music will be available.
