Adding The 'Renegade' Soundtrack

Unlike the other music packs, these take a lot of effort. This is because the Renegade music was designed as non-distracting background music in a shooter game, rather than theme music in a real-time strategy game. As such, the overall playback volume tends to be too low, and the volume varies greatly throughout many of the tracks. If the audio files are converted but not edited, you won't hear much of the music under many typical Yuri's Revenge game conditions. Therefore, I feel an audio editing program is essential for setting up this music pack. Further more, the Renegade audio files are in MP3 format, so a program is needed to convert from MP3 to WAV. See the Tools page for suggestions.

Further more, unlike the other C&C games, Renegade must be installed in order to extract the audio files. You cannot extract them directly from the Renegade game CD.

There are 20 very good tracks in Renegade, that for some reason seem to sound even better in Yuri's Revenge. So I feel that creating this music pack is rewarding enough to be worth the effort.

Creating the Renegade Music Packs:

  1. Refer to the following tables to perform the directions below. Be sure to name the music pack filenames exactly, or the game will not find them; and name the mix files exactly as well, or the YR Playlist Manager will not recognize that you have the Renegade music packs installed.

  2. Ensure that Renegade is installed on your computer. Using XCC Mixer, navigate to:
    \Renegade\Data\always.dat
This is a really big mix file and will take the Mixer a while to read, so be patient. [Help]

  3. Extract the files listed in the 'Source File' columns of the tables. [Help]

  4. Edit the extracted MP3 files as you see fit. [Help]

  5. Convert the MP3 files to 22.050 kHz WAV IMA ADPCM format. Save the files using the filenames specified in the 'Music Pack File' columns of the tables. [Help]

  6. Create a new MIX file, name it ecachethemeREN1.mix, and insert the 10 tracks listed in the first table into this MIX. Then create another new MIX file, name it ecachethemeREN2.mix, and insert the 10 tracks listed in the second table into this MIX. (If you wish to put all the tracks into one single large MIX file, then name it ecachethemeREN.mix). [Help]

  7. Ensure that the new MIX files you have created are in your Red Alert 2 folder so the game can find them.

  8. If you wish, you can now delete the loose audio files you've been working with to create these music packs.

  9. Enable the Renegade soundtrack using the Playlist Manager. During the game, the Renegade music will be available.
